On my book I plan to explain to youth beginning in Showing how to understand Shows.
If you are showing a great rabbit and you win, great keep your happiness to yourself.
If you loose congratulate the winner. I have been to many shows as exhibitor and as viewer, but I have never ever seen a great breeder brag or boast about their winnings, that simply doesn't happen. it's natural to be happy and share with friends but with a limit.
How does it work?
So you are on a table, and there are 6 does, one is too long, one has bad molt, one has too narrow of a muzzle, one has slipped crown, one has good condition but long ears and one is just a ounce from 4.0lb and is flat.
You are showing 2 of them and there are 2 more exhibitors showing 2 more does each. Although none represent the Standard of Perfection they also have no disqualification, so they CAN be shown, please remember I said CAN not SHOULD! If you are really breeding to improve the breed you would patiently wait until you are REALLY producing high quality animals then show them ,instead of going to every little 4H show and fairs trying to earn legs to animals that doesn't deserve a leg. It feel good to win and we all deserve the ribbons for the effort and for the amount of work that goes to breed and raise rabbits but if you want to be honest to yourself and truly get better on what you do, you need to stop and rethink your Strategy. Many will collect many ribbons and Trophies because they feel like that is a license to sell babies at high price, since their parents have "earned" so many ribbons....they must be worth...Well not true. Our ego can be boosted by a win but we cannot let that control the quality of our herd, quality can be seen regardless of the amount of ribbons a person may display. A judge will still award a animal with mediocre quality if they don't have disqualification. so winning BOB can be simply deceiving, The question should always be: "Against what"? if this is your thoughts after the show.."I won 1st place because I have a great quality animal and I worked hard to produce"... Then Congratulations, you truly deserve it to celebrate, not brag, celebrate.
We have shown animals that had much less quality then standard calls for and we learned what it means to be on a show table, some we did terrible some we did better then expected, however our Goal is to produce high quality Holland Lops that CAN and SHOULD compete Nationally, so we need understand how the shows work.
Back to our scenario, Although all the does are mediocre and probably shouldn't be there in the first place, because they are not a animal to represent the breed, since they have no disqualification the judge will have to award BOB,BOSV,BOV,BOSB,1st. Class, but that shouldn't motivate you to continue to show mediocre quality, because that just means that you got a $0.50 ribbon, doesn't change the quality of the animal, you cannot make a bad animal into great no matter how many ribbons you display!
