It is only 7 am here is Utah, and I'm feeling disturbed after seeing more than 500 rabbits for sale on KSL, our classified ads. I'm concerned about where all of these rabbits are going to end up for winter. I know that these animals being sold on the Internet, on free local classifieds are being sold to people who are buying on impulse, without knowledge. It makes me frustrated because I have a huge process to make sure my rabbits will go to a forever home. I do not sell them for birthdays, Christmas, or Easter. I discourage buying bunnies for children. I'm licensed with the city, state and USDA. The people using classified ads to sell rabbits are making a huge mistake by breeding rabbits without the proper type described on the Standard of perfection. Each day more and more rabbits are bred without any knowledge and many are abandoned. I wanted to make a petition asking the local newspaper to stop allowing people from selling rabbits on the classifieds, but then I thought of how unrealistic that would be, I would probably never succeed anyway. The other day I was at my local farmer store, and they had some bunnies for sale. They could not have been 8 weeks old,and since I'm the only USDA approved and licensed rabbit breeder in Utah, I wonder where the farmer store get those rabbits. I'm pretty sure that in order to sell a rabbit sight unseeing you must be a USDA licensed breeder, and since the breeder of those rabbits wasn't there selling them, I have to assume that someone is breaking the law. I know this problem is none of my business, but at the same time, it is frustrating to see so many rabbits being sold on a whim to uneducated buyers by irresponsible breeders.
So what can I do about this problem?
All I can do to protect rabbits is educate people. We need to join forces and spread the word out about the importance of researching before buying a bunny. People are clueless about rabbit's needs, and when they are confronted with an issue, since they just paid $25-$75 dollars per bunny, they dispose of them.
The worse part of it all is those rabbits that are abandoned by their owners into shelters, parks or neighbors yard; they do not know what is wrong, and they love their family.
