Studies have been released with a large amount of benefits from allowing baby rabbits to stay with their mothers as long as possible. Not only that but in some states it is also against the law to sell rabbits under 8 weeks to a individual.
Here in Utah many breeders are known to sell babies under 8 weeks and that happen because they are not aware of the laws I am sure because they wouldn't do it knowing the amount of fees they could pay if they got caught!
Here at Gio's Holland lops of Utah we only sell the babies after they are at least 8 weeks old.
Just like any mammal, rabbits benefit from nursing from their mothers as long as possible.
From ages 6-13 weeks rabbits goes thru a "ugly" stage where they look long and awkward, hence why most of breeders who are not concern about improving the breed sells their babies as early as 5-6 weeks of age. At early age they are small, short and cute, making them easier to sell at that point, however they are not getting all the benefits designed by their mothers milk.
Even when they start eat and drink on their own, they should still be with their moms at least until 8 weeks.
Be aware of pet store and pet breeders selling babies under 8 weeks of age.
