Here in Utah people are under the impression that bunnies are cheap pets, all you have to do is buy a starter kit that barely fit the bunny while baby and you are good to go....That's far from being true.
I was at my feed store ordering MannaPro today when I saw two well intended grandparents, showing the bunnies to a 2 year old. Normally people are clueless regarding bunnies and they think that bunnies are a perfect fit for small children, but in my opinion a bunny shouldn't be sold as a small child pet, period.
I have heard from :" I want my boy to learn responsibility" to "My kids are autistic and need something to calm them down" ,I understand that we all have anxieties and real life problems but I don't think a bunny is a solution for everyone's problems. In Fact a big fault is of breeders locally who advertise "cheap bunnies for kids" the end is Humane society full of unwanted rabbits and us being blamed for it. No one should adopt a pet to solve a problem. Pets are loving creatures that should have the right place in our household and they should be understood before adopted; bunnies are great pets for mature independent adults, who are beyond the selfishness of self satisfaction and are actually wanting to love someone instead of receive love, not that bunnies don't love us back, but they are animals. We need understand that they are meant to be free not caged, human have changed their habitat and forced them into captivity, we need to respect and understand their behaviors like digging, chewing, running, jumping...etc. although my bunnies are cuddly and cute they need their alone time too and children not always respect our need of being alone...lol.
I do not sell cheap bunnies, I spend a lot for my rabbits they have a great home and when I sell one is to the right buyer for the right price, but my bunnies are sold to people who calculated the cost, not just financially but emotionally and physically. They have thought about it beyond the starter kit and they are ready to spend the money to provide the life my bunnies deserve. I can guarantee you that a person who pays what I ask, and wait for my bunnies they don't simply dispose of them. They love them and the whole experience of getting one of them.
I wanted to write this article not to be rude or senseless but I wanted to help people understand that buying a bunny is different them buying a $4.99 rat at Petco. They require Exotic Pet Vet care, Hutches, High quality Diet and most of all ,a lot of your time. Rabbits cannot be alone when you go on vacation and boarding them average $25.00 per day, not all that much but at the end everything ads up yearly. Please calculate the costs before adopting a bunny from anyone, but especially from me because we just don't need more abandoned animals out there.
Welcome to my Blog. I hope to inspire you to develop a wonderful relationship with your rabbits. I will share my thoughts and daily updates here. I hope you enjoy!
