There are many opportunities to show rabbits in Utah and States around us, however there is a lot of work involved, there are also risks for the animals and that's why we are very selective of the shows we attend. We do not exhibit in County fairs or 4h programs because we would never consider exposing our Holland lops to 7 days inside of a cage alone. We do not value ribbons more then the quality of life of our animals. My twins now are over the age of earning ribbons at youth show, and we have a goal in mind.
We are very excited to show in the Open Class now instead of youth. It present a huge challenge for us as we will go against some of the best breeders in the Nation by showing in Open. It was fun to start on the youth class and slowly move to a different level, we are looking forward to be up to the challenge and to just get better and better, although we will no longer see so many ribbons as prizes ,we will be pushing ourselves to much better standards.
Some have asked us to explain:
The difference is very simple: like in any venue that is presented to children, they are to be encouraged so the judges are careful to find a good point on every bunny even when they think that specific animal didn't belong there. The goal is to motivate kids to learn and become responsible. They give ribbons as prizes, candy, trophies and the children go home so proud and excited for the next show, mission accomplished!
On the Open competition judges are not sugar coating, they know there are no parents hiding behind their children to earn a ribbon for their barn, these are the shows where you learn what your herd is all about. I'm not talking about Grand Champions bought from renowned rabbitries that compete nationally,I'm talking about beginners like me developing their own line from scratch, growing out what you bred, not what you bought.
There is a huge difference, knowing how to judge what's good and what is not it's hard, but that's what make so exciting because anyone can Buy Holland Lops to show and earn Grand Champion Legs and many do just that, but only few can truly grow them.
Our goal at Gio's Holland Lop of Utah is to improve our herd by selecting animals of exceptional quality born in our rabbitry, growing them out and showing only those animals. We do not free advertise to renowed rabbit breeders because we pride our time, there is no point in buying bunnies to show.
Although the kids enjoy the ribbons, our goal is to stand tall, proud of our knowledge and patience. We want to breed and raise the best not simply buy the best.
We are very thankful to all our fellow breeders that allowed us to buy from them before we knew how to, but now We are challenging ourselves to raise and breed High quality as close as possible to Standard of perfection,Holland Lops of our own line GW's. We understand that it will be a long process but who is in a hurry?
